Swapping sand

First off, I would like to state that I currently have no interest in going BB. Although the idea intrigues me, I am not prepared to give up my sand yet. That being said. I am looking for advice on the best way to swap out my sand.

A little background. I currently have a 30g cube that has been up and running for about 6 months. When picking my substrate, I chose to use about 1 1/2" of sugar fine sand. I have come to the conclusion that this may have been a mistake. It is so fine that it just gets on everything. Part of the reason is my flow wich is around 20x, although this does not seem to be a problem unless I change my outlets. It mostly occurs after maintenance.

I am looking to replace it with something a little coarser. I will be breaking the tank down in about two weeks, just moving it from the first to second floor. I am not sure if I can just replace the whole thing at that time orif I need to seed some prior to the move. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shawn

i would save a cupful of your old sand when you move and then add it to the new sand. It will seed the new sand with life. If you want to switch it out the move is going to be your best opportunity to do it.

I guess what I am trying to find out is, how much will this screw with my tank by replacing most of the sand?
