Surge Bucket

I am currently in the process of building a surge bucket for my 75gal reef. Do any of you use one? If so, how long of a time period between surges should there be? How many gallons do you dump each surge and how long does the surge last? When I install the surge bucket, should I remove all of the power heads from the tank or leave one for circulation between surges? Thanks for everyones help and I'm sure I'll have many more questions before and after I install it
