sumps ??

What purpose exactly do sumps serve? Are they a mandatory peice of tank hardware, or optional.

I have a 47 gal. reef. Should I look into getting one?

They add extra water volume. They also can hold things like your heater, skimmer, a filter, dosing, top offs, or anything else that you dont want in the main display.
