Sumps

Hi Guys,

Haven't posted in awhile, and I was wondering if one can have to big of a sum? I have a 125 gallon tank and someone just gave me a 90 gallon tank. MORE WATER is good right?

Nope, can't have too much water! Later you could even put a whole lot of LR which will act as an awesome filtration! I wish i had a 90 sump! Except, heck, if you have room, you could connect the two and make it another reef!

Great Information Greg. Id like to add one thing though...
with tanks that do not have "predrilled" holes, and for people that have to use hang on Over flow boxes....the simple fact that syphon failure is a scarry thing is enough to turn me off to the idea....BUT.....
what if I was to rig a Float switch up so if the HOT overflow box were to lose its syphon...once the water in the main tank reaches a certain level it turns off the Return pump. This would avoid the disaster of 10-30 gallons of water in your living room..... would this work????
just something I may do ....need feedback first

If I put LR in the Sump I'd need to light it then too, right?

Float switches provide another layer of security for sure. They can fail though. Be sure they don't get encrusted with salt creep.

Rock probably isn't necessary in the sump unless you have very little in the tank. It isn't necessary to light it either unless you want it to have coralline. Even then, you don't need very much light.
