Sump Setup Questions?

My main question was concerning water flow. Is there more to a sump than just a place to put your heater and skimmer? For some reason I had thought it be a way to reduce power heads.. but of you push to much water through your skimmer wouldn't work efficently?

Perhaps this is dependent more on the SIZE of your sump? Anyone tell me if im headed inthe wrong direction.

Using a 50 Gallon tank, was going to use a CPR Hang on overflow, just need to figure out what flow rate im going to use.

Soon after I wish to add the refugium. Just going in steps. Finally got a few snails.. Few but hungry!

Sump can be as basic or as complex as you want. The return will increase current in the tank, but IMO flow rates higher than you can push water thru a skimmer are less than efficient. Slower flow is good for a refugium , IMO FWIW

The biggest thing that you have to worry about with a hang on overflow is getting a pump that will not be too strong for the overflow. Like Doug said you can have as much or as little in the sump as you want. HTH

and yes sump size will determine the force of a given volume of water thru the sump. 500g owater an hr thru 10g sump will be faster and more violent than same amount thru a 50 g sump, the energy is dispersed over a lrager area, longer dwell time , etc
