The side that has the gate valve attaches to the pump which pumps the water back into the tank, which side is that?
the output side would be on top of the pump. the drain is the part that is conceted to the sump. a gate valve on the drain side is fine it is to be used for when you have to clean or remove the pump other wise you will be cleaning up water.

So does that mean that the gate valve I have is on the correct side?

you would need two gate valves one for the drain for maintenance and one for the out put side to reduce the flow.
if you like i can post a picture of my sump it's just a basic setup.

I think the sump the LFS has both, but I was just referring to the one that connects to the pump.

I would like that if you would!
And if anyone has any illustrated pictures of sumps, I wouldn't mind seeing a few of those.
Pictures are my friend.

and one other reason for reducing the flow would depend on what type of skimmer and what the gph. of the pump is. in theory you want to try and match the out put of the overflow to the gph. of the skimmer.

1. the first section i have my filter sock and protein skimmer
2. bubble traps 3 of them i spaced them 2 inches apart the flow of the water goes over, under, over
3.the third section is the return this is were you want to have your ATO to fill for evaporation.
i used a 29gal. tank and made sure i left enough room in the first section for a reactor if i choose to use one. this is on my 75gal.

Okay, that picture helped a lot!
Which octopus is that?
How much was it?
Does it skim good?

And I still have no lighting, not sure what to get.
I'm probably going to end up going fowlr unless I can find a cheap t5ho that can grow some softies atleast on the top of the tank.

remember when you choose a skimmer make sure you get one that is rated much higher then the total volume of water that includes the sump.

You can keep anything you want with t5ho even if they're not individual reflectors?
And they're not high quality brand?
And they're cheap? XD

Would recommend the skimmer you have?
I'm not sure of the size of my sump, but I'd have to say it's 55g at MOST.
And even then, I only fill it about halfway, right?
So lets say my maximum gallon is about 100g.

the most important thing about the brand is how reliable it is. no sense wasting money on something that may quit working a year from now. and the individual reflectors is were you would get the most bang for your buck.

it would depend on your stocking list the more you keep the bigger the skimmer but it would work.
