This was initially when the tank was filling, now the skimmer is in use and the vortex chamber is also installed. You can see its pretty minimal, all thats in there is the return pump, skimmer, heater and ATO. For anyone wondering, its a 55g rubbermaid (48''x22'') and I have no problems at all with it, except for the fact that it doesnt look cool. I can update later when I get home with a new pic.

I am currently starting to design my sump... I'm just tagging along as well to get some ideas. I'll post a picture of my current one tonight so you all will have a good laugh.

Yea, there seems to be a lot of people building sumps (or re-building sumps) right now. Me included. So I thought I start this thread so we could see what is out there.

Oh, sorry...

Here is my sump design as of last night (after pulling out the skimmer). It is now disassembled and I just have a 29g in there with no baffles. I'm changing my design slightly and moving the skimmer to the second section in the sump. This will leave the first section completely open as it seems to be where most all of the detritus is settling. With the forst section empty it will be easy to suck out all the detritus once a week.

I am running a very slow flow sump in order to aid the settlement of poo. As you can see in the first pic, the return valve is only open about 25%.

actually that picture is about 6 months old.

Now that you mention it, there are a bunch of us doing this. I'd include one of mine, but I don't have a full shot since getting the return plumbing done this morning.

Well, this is an old picture......and this tank is no longer running. But I ran the system without a skimmer, and it was purely natural filtration. It worked better than I thought it would, but it was not the best design. If anything it was just really cool to look at. Very often I would look at the sump more than the display, which should say something....lol. I wouldnt set up a sump like this again, unless this was the display tank. Right before I shut it down, I tried a skimer, but it just didnt pull anything out of the water. (I know the filter sock begs to differ)
