sump or refugium???

I am in the process of setting up a 75g frag tank (mostly SPS) with overflows.

I had a few questions that I wanted to get peoples throughts on (if you don't mind)..

1) I have an extra quiet one 5000. I use this pump on my main tank that has dual overflows. The new tank just has a single overflow. Will the quiet one 5000 be too powerful? I'm thinking the more flow the merrier....

2) I have a refugium on my main tank. I was thinking about just going with a big sump with no sand and no macro algae. Do I need the sand in that tank at all or any macro algae?

3) I have about 60-70 pounds of very porus LR. Should I put this in the sump or the main tank? Will this be sufficient biofiltration? I will (of course have a skimmer)

Any other watchouts / risks advice with the frag tank would be great.

Thanks

Congrats on the new system - I'd think just a bare sump would be the way to go

I don't have a pinch of sand in my tank, and with only about 100lbs of rock in my 150 gallon tank. I think you'll have plenty of surface area in the tank.

Do you know how much that pump pushes? You probably only need about 600 gph on the return, and a "5000" sounds like a beast!!

You have enough rock, no worries there! I would go with a bar sump also, slow flow (sumps arnt for flow) will enable you to use the sump as a settling location for detritus rather than the tank. Makes for easy cleaning.
If its a SPS frag tank then I would add some PHs or a CLS with that 5000!

That pump can push 1330 gph with no head. It's about a 1000gph with 3'-4' of head (which is about what it would have with the tank height and a few elbows)

Thanks for the feedback guys !
