sump microbubbles buckets

Someone (Geoff?) had mentioned using a taller bucket inside of a smaller bucket inside of the sump to help reduce the amount of microbubbles getting back to the tank... I've done searches but can't find reference to that thread...

Could this be explained a little more thoroughly?

Thanks!

it's using buckets as your baffles

Yes, I understand that but exactly how are we placing these buckets and do they get modified? Do I just place the taller bucket inside the shorter one and that's it? No holes drilled or anything?

the tank water drains into the garbage can on the left
then that drains into a 5 gal bucket

both of the buckets have tubes that pull water from the bottom
instead of draining off the top

So, it's not merely placing one inside the other then...

it was actually Tom, but i understand the concept and have used it many times.

you do place one bucket inside the other, but one of the buckets would need holes in the bottom. you also do not what the buckets fitting closely inside each other. the difference in diameter of the buckets is what is slowing the flow down to evacuate the bubbles.

an example would be to put the skimmer in a bucket. now place that bucket inside another bucket. drill some holes near the bottom of that bucket. now place all of these in your sump.

you can also use PVC on the outlet of a skimmer only instead of placing the entire skimmer in a bucket. you can use small buckets also and just run the skimmer outlet into the buckets.

OK, so this is only if you have a skimmer in the sump? You don't wind up with microbubbles just from the water running into the sump itself?

A lot of people do this for the drain as well especially when the display is on a higher floor (ie basement sump).

yes, the water draining from the tank will cuase bubbles
I just found that the skimmer fit into the bucket very well
