sump ?

Is their a way to test and see if your skimming enough, whatever enough means. Is there any type of hang on skimmer that is good or one that can be kept outside of a sump and pumped back to the tank

Thanks for putting up with the novice questions

what size tank? several skimmers are able to be used externally. several skimmers actually need external pumps in order to work properly.

several skimmers can sit beside the the sump tank. They are fed by a powerful external pump which uses alot of energy.
These are usually the beckett style skimmers, which are very efficient but they require large pumps and are difficult to tune.

can these skimmers pump water back up the level of the tank if placed lower or does the output of the skimmer need to see no flow restriction

skimmers need to have no flow restrictions on the outlets. the pumps on skimmers is before the skimmer, not after the skimmer. the pump will not be able to push the water up without overflowing the skimmer itself.
