Suicide clowns

So I decided to go with two perculas instead of leaving the tank empty for a while like I had planned. I got them from a LFS at $31.00 each, but I know there fish and corals are top notch so its worth the price. I just put them in Sunday afternoon, when I came home this AM and one jumped out and is dead in front of the tank on the floor. How disappointing. Anyway how can I stop this. I have a MH thats about 6-7'' over the top of the tank. Thought about an egg crate (will it melt),or a glass top(blocks light?), Plexiglas?? How do I keep the fish safe and still get the most out of my light?
Some days this hobby really frustrates me.

I've never heard of a clown jumping - - ? I'd invest in a glass top, easy to clean - you can have glass cut for you at the local HWS, sand the edges before putting it on the tank so you don't cut yourself. I have glass on top of both tanks with MH and it doesn't affect it much.

Ouch, sorry for the lost man.
Clowns do jump, I had a large beautiful nemo clown that jump when I first started. Sadly like yours, it was dead and dried when I found it the next morning.

Glass top is a good idea if you have a open top sump that will allow for air exchange. If you don't have a sump, it may not be a good idea to cover the whole top of the tank.

I lost 2 clowns to "carpet surfing", and I have heard of plenty of others loosing clowns in the same way, IMHO it is not unusual at all. Because I have a clown in my tank and I want to keep him IN the drink, but don't want to block light to my coral,... I built a full canopy for the tank which is inclosed but has fans to move air through.

Whiskey

The light won't melt the eggcrate at 6-7" away BTW, plenty of people use that for a top under MH.

Sorry for the loss, I'm with Whiskey on a full canopy. As long as you have cooling fans, its a great way to keep they in. No glass to block the light. No melting egg crates.

Unless they go thru the overflow and then repel to the ground, no one is getting out of this tank.
