I am shortening the term from "garbage" pail. I could not bring myself to call them garbage pails...and yes they are plastic.

why does everyone need to make so much water? i have a 65 gallon tank and I have a 5 gallon paint bucket! 5% is 6 gallons of water needed ea week.... plus top off water. Even if you have a 200 gallon tank.... thats 20 gallons and maybe 5 gallons for top off?? I was always told that havin salt water sit for a long period of time is bad, even if there was a heater and PH in it......

I am not convinced that that's the case.

if the SW is mixed/heated...you can store it for about a week or two. If it's sitting stagnant...maybe 3 days tops.

As for why we need so much......you NEVER know! What if your tank crashed..and you suddenly need to do a 50% water change? you gonna wait all day for the water to be ready?

Not to mention, I use it to clean the stuff too. SO while a water change only takes me 15 gals...I use another 10-15 washing/rinsin' stuff off.

that and I have 4 diff tanks...so when I do my WC's, I need about 40 gallons total! (sigh)

I may never make 44 gallons of salt water at a clip but it nice to know that I can if I have to. I figured with a 90 gallon tank...a 50% WC is never more than 12 hours away. God forbid!
