Substrate poll ~help~

Ok I need some help making a choice on what substrate to use. I have remote sandbeds already in another location and there is far to much flow for a fine particle substrate so the question arises. Should I go with a geo-marine sized stuff or should I take the hammer out and start pounding some live rock down to pinky nail sized rumble.

Yes definatly for looks. beside i wrote a bunch of swear words on the foam under the tank (a few tense moments in response to pain delivered by the stand) and they are visable throught the acrylic

Hi Mike! If the geo marine is a larger grain so as to stay down I would use that instead of "rubble" rock!

If you are looking for the true reef look I think having a couple inches of sand would be more appropriate! JMH

Mike, honest, I wouldn't use anything that would trap detritus.

ESV GeoMarine crushed coral. Its aragonite crushed coral. Also used by many as co2 reactor media.

Mike, I used an inch or so of Geo-Marine in my tank. It looks good and covers my foam. I suppose it does collect detritus like Jerel says, but I wanted something there. I can vacuum the front portion easy, if I wanted.

I have a little finer sand, in the back behind the rock, for the conches to hide if they wish, {however they seem to like the cc} and for my leopard wrasse to hide in.

There seems to be a tons of worms living in it. All kinds. I must say, IMO, worms of all species seem to prefer the courser gravel as compared to fine sand. For sure bristle worms do. I also have some piles of rubble in various areas. The bristle worms love that also, as do all the crabs. And the pods.

However, my new tank, is to new to give you along term view of the use of the GeoMarine.
You need to ask yourself;
-how easy will it be to clean the gravel bed if needed?
-will the amount of current keep a bare bottom clean or will I still have to siphon it clean? Like the above, hard to do in a large tank.

I am going to add a pair of pink spotted watchmen gobies to keep mine cleaned. They do a good job at that and I dont rely on the beds life to do anything. Of course thats only good for an inch or less, which is about all they turn over during feeding.

I also vote for Geo marine as it is pretty cheap compared to other grades of substrate. Cost always gets exponiential because of the size. I would just use bare minimum to cover the bottom.

Also would be nice to be able to vacum if needed compared to sugar size.

Keep the rubble sized LR to mount all those future frags...

WOW u guys surprise me. I though that live rock crunched down to the geo size would have been more of the choice. Doug I was hoping you would reply. thanks for your input. for me there is no way for sand of any kind. I dont think standard CC would work either. the flow is just to heavy and to random. I am sure there will be a few spots that will need cleaning form time to time. for me this substrate is purely for looks.

I was leaning towards the live rock as it gives a more jagged apperance then the rounded geo. I think I will get some geo and crush up some rock and take a pic for you and me to see first hand.

I have a ton of rubble, more then enough to do the tank and keep the sump full..

i will post a pic soon.

Actually I think I was second to vote, but I didnt comment cause auto spell chick was on a runaway. I believe I voted for GM tho if you have the rubble why not. Tho you might want to ask Steve if he has anymore of the large reef vacs

I voted LR rubble.

If you have extra why not? Plus smashing it all up sounds fun to me! Its one way to release any anger that has built up during the construction process.
