Stupid Stupid Stupid thing!!!

Oh no! What have I done now!!??!?!?!?!

Ok... so I went into my LFS to get water for a water change... that and to trade in my kenya tree coral for something else (scored this REALLY cool piece - I'll have to show you that later - but I've been wanting it for months... long story - they were supposed to be babysitting it for someone who was just moving tanks - 2 weeks max... well 4 months later - it's still there - so now it's mine!) However -that's NOT the stupid thing...

Blue Damsels - THAT's the stupid thing! They had this CUTE little bright neon blue fish - only $5! So - I asked him - damsels - they're mean right? He said yeah - but only if you put them in first and they can claim territory - not if you put them in last... Think they would go good in my 29 - Yes he says!

Hmm - ok - I'll take 2! So - I get them home - do my WC acclimate them - and BAM - add them to my tank...

THEN I came to TRT to check in and search about these things - only to read crazy stories about them killing all peoples fish!

Now - in WHAT order did I do something wrong - I think it's obvious - I should have come here first!!! Don't I know by now NOT to buy something on a whim?!

So - is my LFS right at all? Has anyone had any experience adding these things last to a tank and having them be ok?

I don't think it matters when you add them. I'd catch them and take them back.

Can you put your rock in a bucket and try to catch them in the empty tank?

I added mine first and they say that one will rule the tank but.......when i put in the percula they had words and they perc put him in his place. Now he is in there with a few other fish and has his own corner. Now for having two of them in a tank I dont know because perhaps both could gang up on something and kill it.
Keep your eyes open

Wow Wow Wow - what did I do!?

So far tonight - everyone was picking on them... hopefully they won't plot revenge!

The Flame Angel and Pigmy Angel were particularly chasing them around... If I need to - I'm not afraid to bag them up and take them back... I guess I'll keep a close watch tonight..

This is encouraging - maybe there is hope!

Looks like everyone found a place to sleep tonight - and all of the old guys have claimed their usual places... so hopefully that's a good sign...

I had 3 damsels w/ a tomato clown, coral beauty and snowflake eel in a 29g several yrs ago. Other than the eel catching and eating one of them, everything was going well for about 6 months before I knocked a hole in the tank, but that is a whole other story...

You'll have to wait and see. Although we can speak in generalities, every fish has it's own personality.

well you dont have very timid fish. I think your flame and pigmy angel will hold there own. what other fish do you have? with a 29 gallon they are gonna be up in each others face all the time watch them very close.

Ok - so one didn't make it through the night!

Maybe it was kind of a blessing in disguise though... When I got it - it had a few nicks in it... and I think it was probably that and a combination of acclimating it during a water change? I thought better of that towards the end of that... Or - maybe someone didn't like it? I'm going to test my water - but the smaller of the 2 is what's left, so maybe it's better to just have 1 anyway...

Sorry about the loss Kim. Try to get that body out ASAP so it won't foul up your system (you have a small tank, it will be affected much more dramatically than a larger system).

Thank you!!! I did - got him out right away!! As soon as the lights came on and I realized it... It's in my 29g and no one had gotten to him yet - so hopefully it'll be ok. I do have some extra water left over from my WC yesterday - maybe I'll just suck some out and dump that in just to be safe?

Is that fine to do?

Should be, but you have to be more careful about matching temp and salinity when dealing with a small system.
