Starting a Reef Tank

I have lots of questions. I have a 75 gal. fish only tank. My wife and I have decided to make a coral reef tank out of it. We bought a 20 gal. fish aquarium to house our non coral friendly tank mates. We have a Coralife Super Skimmer 125 gal. I am going to move that to the 20 gal. tank. I need to know what is the best skimmer for a 75 gal. reef tank that is affordable.
In Drs. Foster and Smith they have a Maxi-Jet Natural Wave Maker System. If I were to go with Model 1200 Wave Maker System, will this work in the 75 gal. tank or do I need to get something else that will work better and do a better job. Or could I use the Natural Wave Timer and and the Power Sweep Model 228 or am I wrong and I need something all together different.
For my lighting can I use the Nova Extreme T-5 with Lunar Lights the 48 in. 432 watt; eight 54 watt with 4 lumar lights, will this work for my 75 gal. reef tank or do I need to go brighter. Am I right in assuming that you need the lights on 24/7.
My wife and I went to see a reef tank and both fell in love with it. My wife fell in love with the purple clams and all the beautiful corals. We would really appreciate any assistance in getting an affordable reef tank started. Thank you.

Welcome to TRT

Great lighting choice - I really like those fixtures.

I wouldn't bother with the Power Sweep - it will stop sweeping inside of a couple of weeks once it gets some coralline algae on it. I'm not big on that wave timer either - but for its price it's fine - just use regular Maxijet powerheads. If you like you can add Hydor Flo diffusers on them.

Skimmer - well define "affordable" - Euroreef RS80 is nice but it runs about $300 or so, pump included. Runs circles around the Coralife, IMO.

Welcome. The lights do not need to be on 24/7, maybe 8-9 hours a day.

The ASM G2 would be a good skimmer for you too...

Look at the Hydor Korallia powerheads too...I like them a lot!

"light cycle" may be on 24/7 but thats incuding all your phases.
1-2 hours in morning w/ just actinics (sunrise). then .
8-10 hours w/ actinics and "white" lights (mid day). then .
1-2 hours in evening w/ just actinics again (sunset). then .
just moon lights during the night (night/lunar phase)

invest in some timers - look for aquarium ones
hope it helps.
