starting a new marine aquarium


i just started a new tank well its used but i just re set it up and the water is so cloudy i cant see anything to even put the corals in......... will turning the filter on clear the sediment or should i just waite?

whoa.. slow down there for a minute. Give us more background on the tank, whats in it, how long it was set up, what size, your equipement you're using, etc etc.

Did you make up entirely new saltwater for the tank?

Don't add any coral or anything to the tank,till it cycles.

it sounds like the coral was already in there and he bought a tank that was already set up. your best bet man is to find someone in a local reef club that can watch everything for you until your tank is cycled and everything can go back in. if that sand bed was old and you reused it, you just let off a ton of bad stuff into the water. If it was new sand but you reused the water, you might be OK. hopefully you washed the sand though.

Worry about getting your salinity, temp, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, etc. in check and STABLE before anything goes back in.
