Starfish question with pic

What might this be coming out of my starfish?? I just did a good siphon and he came out from under a rock with this hanging out of the center of him??

I mean the brown stringy stuff?? It comes out of his underside put the flow is wrapping it around him

Any thoughts??

He's expelled his stomach, I think.

Is it still hanging out? He could have been trying to eat something deep in the rocks and then got knocked off. Don't remove him until you see him starting to fall apart.

Starfish ingest their food by expelling their stomachs over it. But that's a lot of stomach, if that's what it is... But it's coming out of his mouth, so it makes sense...
I'd get him out and observe him if you have a good place to do so +1 to Thothandisis.

It's still hanging out...at first he was nice and stiff when he flew out of there but now he's kinda limp and deflated looking in spots...ill leave him through the night and check tomorrow...if he's dead I'm sure the hermits will be all over him!!

Should I move him up on a rock or something to help his chances?? The only other tank I have is a ten gallon setup in my stepsons room and I doubt the params are the same so the switch to that tank would probably do more harm than good right??

It does sound right, no sense in putting him through the stress of acclimation into your stepson's tank. Keep an eye on him. If possible, don't leave him for the hermits if he dies.
Sorry about Mr. starfish. I guess we should ask, what are your current water parameters? How long has he been in your tank? It might be random, or his stomach could be a symptom of a rapid parameter shift in your tank.

I'm 99% sure it's my fault as I have another starfish that is doing very well...not sure exact parameters as I find it better if I don't check them so often that way I don't worry about them hahaha he's been in there about 3 weeks or so and has been doing great..not as active as the other starfish which I think is a fromia and this one is a linckia but cool nonetheless!!

I did move him up on a rock and it looks like he pulled whatever that was back in or it fell off and he has moved slightly already so hopefully he'll pull through!!!

Pulling his stomach back in is a great sign!
