SPS and clam with T5?

OK our 75g now has 6x54W T5 HO lighting and the tank is sparsely filled with corals, and being a 75g is not a deep tank.

Flow is the Mag 9 return with two Tunze 6025's.

I am thinking we are medium flow and medium to strong lighting and so far we are only taking on things that are not "difficult" in ease of care.

Does this rule out SPS and all clams or are there some that we can do mixed in with the softies and LPS that are on order.

I keep a Maxima clam at the bottom of my 125 under 6 T5's and it has shown very good growth...what type of T5's do you have?

We got a Current 6 x 54W. It doesn't have totally individual reflectors, they are a big sheet of sheet metal that is formed into a reflector for each. On the value for money scale though and given our expected economic circumstance (which since improved) that seemed like the way to go.

Well you obviously know that individual contoured reflectors are best, but on a 75 I think you'll be in pretty good shape...other than the reflectors you're running the same number of bulbs I have over my 125...one thing you might consider when funds are available would be to upgrade the bulbs...ATI bulbs have quite a bit more PAR than the stock Current ones...and mixing them up a bit can give you better colors too.

I think your tank is 18" deep?I'd buy individual reflectors to have more light into your tank and you'll be OK with a lot of corals and clams like people have said.

mine's a crocea, but i think they're the same way though....

I'm going bare bottom soon (<2 weeks) so I figured I'd let him go until I had a new spot picked out for him. How would you recommend going about that?

I was thinking about just taking a rock, gouging a crevice-like scar into the face of it and just setting him in that. Thoughts?

Oops, my bad, LOL!

You're on the right track though...I just happened to have a piece of rock in my "rock bucket" that was about the right size and had a natural depression in it that the clam fit on just right...you want something that will hold the clam upright but still allows room for the shell to open and close and won't be an issue with growth...personally I would go ahead and get him attached to a small piece of rock sooner than later...then you can move clam and rock together where ever you want him.

I have the same fixture, but 8 bulb version on my 90, I have SPS,LPS and soft corals. SPS and LPS have shown great growth. Lighting is too intense for the shromms and I have to really shade them. Also switched to 4 ATI Atintics and 4 ATI Aqua Blue. A much nicer look then with the stock blubs.

Now worries! I picked up because it looked a lot like a Maxima, should stay under 6", and was only $25

I'll try to find something for him tonight... How to I go about getting him detached?

I was told to feel around under him which would scare him into retracting a good bit of his foot. From there, just take a razer blade and slide it under the foot to remove him. Is that right?

Sounded a lil damaging when the guy that sold it to me told me that, so i figured i'd ask

i have a crocea clam 10" from the surface under 4 x 54w T5HO... I have a monti cap at the same depth, both are doing okay, i've only had them 2+ months so i can't attest to their growth rates, but they are both looking very happy.

I've heard that one a clam attaches that you can't remove them without damaging them and the damage can be fatal, do a lot of research on it before giving it a shot, then let us know how it comes out if you do it, my clam attached in like 3 days and then i wanted to move him and he's not going anywhere!!

HTH...

Wow, no way I would take a razor blade to a clam! Clams don't have a "foot" but rather "threads" that hold them in place...damage to the byssal threads is attributed as one of the most common causes of death in clams...that is exactly why I said find a small piece of rock that you can place it on and let it attach...once it's on there it is nearly impossible to remove it without damage...using a small piece of rock will allow you to move the clam and the rock together if you need/want to relocate it.
