I was told to feel around under him which would scare him into retracting a good bit of his foot. From there, just take a razer blade and slide it under the foot to remove him. Is that right?
Sounded a lil damaging when the guy that sold it to me told me that, so i figured i'd ask

Yes, cutting the threads is the way to remove them. The process is can be dangerous, but cutting the threads is harmless to the clam.
Obviously you need to be very careful. Make sure you "surprise" the clam and grab it before is sucks down to the rock. If it sucks down before you can gently wedge something between the shell and the rock, do not try to force them up, wait a while until it relaxes a bit. If they are attached in a bowl shaped depression, you pretty much don't have a chance of removing them, there is no safe way to get underneath the clam.
When I need to move on of mine, I use a 6" paring knife as it is much easier to maneuver and make sure you only cut the threads. You want to hold the knife or razor blade against the rock it's attached to and basically scrape the threads off.
