Question

Spotted Cardinal

I just got a Spotted Cardinal for my reef tank. After the fact that I bought it I found out that it likes feeder shrimp. I know that its peaceful, but will it try to eat my shrimp that I have in there now? I have 2 sexy shrimp and a fire shrimp. I much rather have the shrimp than the fish. Please help.

Oh and I also have a Catalina Goby, do you think that will hurt my shrimp as well?

According to Robert Fener (The Conscientious Marine Aquariast) Catalina Gobies are a cold water species that won't survive in a tropical tank.

Before I put the goby in there my temp was at 77 degrees, and everything was doing well. So I just dropped it down one degree for the goby and everything still seems to be doing well. I'm monitoring it for the next week to see if there are any problems.

My wife wants one. I think I remember reading that they like the mid to low 70's. Good luck...that's a pretty fish. Sorry I can't tell you if they'll eat the shrimp or not.

Everything I read on that fish and what the lfs told me that its likes it between 75 and 77. Well at least it can tolerate it. This is my second day having the goby and its looking good.

If your temperature spikes for any reason, the Catalina goby is as good as gone... sorry, I have no idea why people continue to sell those. They are awesome little fish but should only be kept in temperate tanks with chillers, IMO. Too many needless deaths.

The cardinal WILL eat a sexy shrimp, as soon as he/she finds it.

The only time cards can be kept with shrimp is large cleaners, if the crustacean is added and established first.

Respectfully, please research your purchases before you make them -- you will save lives and lots of money.

HTH

That Cardinal fish was a last minute buy. So I'm kicking myself in the butt now. I think one of my sexy shrimp is gone already. And I even had to move all my stuff around to get that fish out. Even more mad now. Gotta repeat, learning process. I'll be sure to research more throughly next time.

I only got the Catalina Goby cause my lfs said it would be ok in my temp. Hopefully it will do well. Looks good so far. Crossing fingers.

Thanks JennM for coming through with the knowledge.

Surprised the LFS didn't tell you that if you told them you had shrimp...

Jenn,

Do you think the shrimp will be ok in the same tank with the Goby?

Not sure - I've never kept a Catalina Goby...
