Southdown Sand question

Here in Kansas, home depot does not carry Southdown Tropical Play Sand. Seems this stuff is only available East of the Mississippi. I am trying to find out what HD Stores carry the sand. My request is that if any of you have purchased or seen The sand at your local HD please respond with the city and state. With this info I will try to decide if it is worth my while to gas up the truck and drive to the closest HD to pick up 20 bags or so. Thank you.

Angry

No chance. I begged our HD people for an interstore transfer or special order.
From what I have heard..... one of our big aquarium sand people paid off someone else to make sure that the southdown doesnt get out this way?? Anyone know the truth to this?? I have heard it from more than one person.

If I find out this is true I will never buy products from those people again.

Well conspiracy theories abound, but I think alot of it is simple economics, in order to keep the price down on something like this they will probably source it locally. Since it comes from the east caost and is so heavy, shipping it to the west coast would drive the price up, like the privatly transported stashes that were brought into california, originally sold for about $4 a bag was almost $20 a bag by the time it got out here

We ordered a truck load of it in the Kansas City area last year. It worked out to about $7 a bag. Another local reefer managed to get two pallets transfered from another store. I don't know what the price was, but it is already spoken for and it hasn't even arrived yet.. If there is enough demand and we are able to get HD to continue working with us we may try to arrange another store transfer in the future.

I know a guy out this way that has a WHOLE pallette he has shipped out here and he sells it for 15 bucks a bag and this is still buying retail prices for sand. I am sure that HD doesnt make their stores pay retail and I bet they get a better price on shipping than the average person shipping something for just themselves..... dont you think??

I just wrote the equivalent of a two page letter to them in email. I told them out dilemma - what we use it for, and told them I wanted to know why they wouldnt send it.

I also told them I was going to paste my reply into this board and RC board so we know once and for all what the reason is. I am really getting tired of the games. If everyone else ships sand out here for our aquariums - I dont see the problem.

Going to Raleigh tomorrow to watch the Hurricanes kick some Toronto Booty!!! I will stop by the Home Depot in Cary to see if they have some. I'm driving my pickup so I'll get as much as I think I can carry if they have it.

I just found a supply of 200+ bags. I will let everyone know how it goes. I verified with someone in the store that this is SouthDown Sand SKU#578819 at $4.98 per bag.

I need to figure out how much I can safely carry at a time since this drive is about 2.5 hours.

From everything I've read and heard in the past, it mostly has to do with the individual HD's... If you get a good sales person/manager then it can be done but if you get someone whose lazy and doesn't care and doesn't want to fill out the paperwork then it probably won't happen. I don't personally use SD, it's too fine for a plenum system. Supposedly someone here in Columbus got some SD transfered here for their aquarium. When he was picking it up he asked why others were having so much difficulty getting it transfered. This was the reason they gave him.

Amazing

When
I got the southdown for my 120 in january I paid 3.00 a bag for it. I did sell some off for 6.00 a bag to help pay for the gas and overnight lodging because I had to drive all a ways to get it. But now I hear the same HD jacked the price up to 6.00 a bag. And another person in the area sell for 5.99. It went up 3.00 a bag here in 4 months. It is because people told the HD what we all wanted that sand for............ But I got over 1000 pounds, loaded it upo in the explorer and drove that baby home....

Cheers and happy hunting,
Mike

Well I made out pretty good. It took an hour and three sales guys to find it, but we finally found it out in Home and Gardens 3 shelves up on a shrink wrapped pallet with no label.

I got a guy who would not give up looking for it, because it showed up on his inventory but he had never heard of it.

For all you folks looking for it I took a picture of a bag. You might have to go in search of it if you find a store stocking it.

Here's what 800 pounds looks like in my garage. I had to drop off 200 pounds at a buddy's place on the way home
