Sohal tang in trouble :(
Okay everyone. My Sohal tang hasn't been lookng good lately and was stuck to my powehead this morning. Upon Close inspection I noticed he had some ich on his fins and bodyand Looked pretty thin too he also is swimming very slowly. I scooped him out and threw him in a 5 gal bucket of tank water to act as a QT. Well I coppered it. How long should I keep him in the coppered 5 gallon? Ever time I QT my fish they die. I am lost w/ what to do. The bucket has a powerhead, filter and heater as well as a place to hide

Well, sohals like room and can be very unhappy in small areas. I will say that right now he is stressed pretty good, Have plenty of fresh salt water on hand, That water in the bucket will go downhill very fast. For the tratment to work he will have to be in it for some time, I don't know how long for sure, it will say on the bottle. I'm sorry but I don't remember how big the tank you have him in is. As they grow they like room and will become aggressive fish.

I have a sailfin tang, yellow tang and they usually team up on new additions and kill them, but this one they ended up getting along. I don't know what happened. It appears he stopped eating. I want to add new fish. am just lost with what to add

Well The tank size is good, but the fish later down the road may be the bully, It maybe to late for him already if he is thin and not eating. Now he will be fighting the added stress of being moved to a smaller container. all I can say is keep an eye on him and the water conditions

cant add much more to that.. maybe that the sail fin and yellow tang are the same body form. the others you have added where they close to the same body style? if so that is the reason the picked on them and not this guy as much

Sorry but 125 is IMO small for 3 tangs, the sailfin can get to 12" the Sohal, much bigger. I had a friend once that kept one in a 300g tank it was 8' by 30 something and the Sohal( about a ft) used all of that space .
Good luck with it, but if its weak enough that its stuck to a powerhead I think its in pretty bad shape, any possibility you can return it. Might not get anything for it but hopefully the LFS will have facility to Q it and nurse it back to health

Adam, here's an article you will find helpful:
http://www.petsforum.com/personal/tr...tinetanks.html
Atthis point, if your tang has ich, you can consider the whole tank to be infected. There are only two proven methods for eliminating ich: copper and hyposalinity. Copper is not recommended for tangs, so hypo would be the way to go. In that link there is a section on it and how to get the SG down to 1.009. Good luck!

Your QT has no filter that's why!You have to have a fiter for it to last the week of copper treatment!and the filter can't be new because the copper is strong and will kill it!If your only going to "throgh" him in a bucket then you should do a fresh water dip!that's for short time.

not true. Although the sick schoal tang can transmit the parisite to other fish, Most fish actually carry some form of the parasite and it infects them and makes them sick when they are stressed out. Stress= weak immune system. IMO, this tang needs a tank at least 3 to 4 X bigger than the 125.

And putting it in a five gallon bucket, It will probably die from being in there. Heres what you should do, prepare some fresh RO water for a FW dip. Adjust the Ph of the FW to 8.3 and the temp slightly above that of the tank. Dip him in the fresh water for about 5 minutes. If the ph and temp arent the same as those of the tank, he will die so be carefull. After the dip, lrt him recover from the stress in ur refugium/ sump overnight and bag him and bring him back to the lfs the next day. He will not survive in your tank.

Ive cured countless fish with FW dips over the years without fail and only lost one. Note: any fish that doesnt survive the dip, (providing that the ph and temp where the same as the tank) would have probably not survived the sickness no matter what anyway.
