so all a refugium is.......

i have been reading alot in here and i think this place is great. I have learned alot in here in the last week.

so a refugium is a place where all living things can breed for the benefit for the reef tank without them being eaten by fish or inverts or whatever?... does that pretty much sum it up? its like a safe haven?

I want to make a refugium out of my 30 gallon tank. the dimms are 21x18x18. I have a 65 gallon tank now. I want to put the refugium right next to the tank. i dont have a sump and my tank isnt drilled. i have a fluval 403, a hang on tank skimmer. obviously the refuguim will be lower than the tank. is there any way I could hook up the fluval to the FUG? or maybe just get a hang on one?

Can't answer all the technical stuff, but yes...a fuge serves the purpose of being a place to
1. store ugly apparatus like heater and skimmer (like a sump in this way)
2. have a place to safely grow macro algae that helps consume nutrients (this requires a lit area, not like a sump)
3. a fish free zone where pods are encouraged to grow, which eat detritus and feed the fish when they are either manually harvested or simply overflow into the main tank.

Now you may choose 1 or more of these uses. I know that some people will put damaged corals in there to keep them from being picked on by fish, inverts and other corals. You could technically give protection to a hurt fish, but it would not be a good quarantine.
