Question

snowflake eels info...

I went to the pet store today and saw this little thing in a tank and really liked it. I was wandering if anyone could tell me the growth rate for these guys and how big they get what they eat and any other info as far as what not to keep with them.

I did buy a green serpent starfish for $10 he is rather large outstreched he reaches across a 55gal tank .
also got a chocalate chip for $3
оооо any info on these will help also...

thanks for the input on the other post

Hi there!! I just recently purchased a snowflake eel for my 80 gallon reef tank. They are awesome creatures and enjoy feeding it and watching it move about the reef.
I feed mine raw shrimp, scallop and clam. I feed it every two days or so and it is growing quite rapidly. It was about 5-6" when I got it and now it is about 10" long.
Some people claim they are quite an escape artist so they recommend covering your aquarium top so they can not get out. I keep my eel well fed and have had no problem with it escaping and I have about a 2" opening along the back side of the aquarium.
I keep mine with a banggai cardinal, a sharpnosed puffer and a pair of maroon clownfish.
There are others who keep eels and they will tell their experience as well. Johnny

Hi Mike,
I've got a Chainlink, first cousin to the Snowflake. They are both species of Echidna, growing up to about 30" at a rate of 1/2" per month if well fed. They need a good sized tank and can push the bioload for a moderate sized reef tank over the limit.
Their natural diet is primarily crustaceans, hence the short rows of teeth for crushing rather than the fangs of the Gymnothorax types.
I feed mine pieces of frozen Lance Fish, thawed with a bit of Selcon, two or three times a week with shrimp pellets as snacks in between. The freeeze dried jumbo Krill is a good food for them as well.
They are generally peaceful but will snatch a shrimp in a hurry!
As for the Green Serpent, watch out as they are predators...keep them well fed...those long arms are for prey capture and have been known to eat fish!
The Chocolate Chip is another reef-unfriendly..they do eat corals, clams, and can deplete your sandbed of beneficial 'pods.
I would recommend you get a copy of Robert Fenner's The Conscientious Marine Aquarist. It has much good info about the animals commonly sold in the aquarium trade and which ones to watch out for.
HTH,
Dick

Back in my dark days of reefing, when I was still a sadly uninformed marine tank keeper, I had a snowflake. I got him to eat frozen krill, and everything was going great until I found him as a dried kitten toy on the floor. I would cover the edges of the tank to prevent an escape just to be on the safe side.

Hi Mickadee!! I forgot to mention, I also have a green brittle star and he is quite large. I feed my raw shrimp, scallop, clam and spirulina discs(100 percent vegetable conditioning food) and the brittle star really likes these. Keep it well fed and I don't believe you will have trouble losing fish, etc. Johnny

Right now the serpent star and choclate chip star are a tank with 2 damsels I didnt get the snowflak because I wanted to get more info on it before I did
I think I will pass on it till I get the 150gal setup and going in a few months. I will watch the stars and see what they do and thanks for the info in them I didnt plan on a reef tank with them so I think they will be all right in a fish only tank(( I hope))

just not sure what I am going to put in it yet other than the stars..
anyone have any suggestions on a good fish only tank with variety in a 55gal tank???

thanks
Mike
