Snail from the beach ID
We probably shouldnt bring things from the beach home but we found these 2 snails and wondered if they were safe in a reef tank, they have kind of V shaped tails and a long skinny "snout". If we cant put them in we'll just return them to the beach but they are cool.

I would say no way reefsafe especially since you can buy reefsafe ones in FortWalton for 99 cents.

lol, yes I did buy them anyway!
thats where I bought the 2 turbos for 5 each, they are probably bigger than the 99 cent snail, I dont know, I really try and let my hubby do the running around for fish stuff so I dont just buy something on impulse! hehehe Do you ever go into the aquariums and more store in Valpraiso? They had a couple clams in there yesterday, one was at least 6 inches long. Thats the first one I've actually seen, they are VERY pretty!

Casey, I think maybe you're like the guy who won't eat a mushroom from the woods, only the store, cause you don't have enough confidence in your identification abilities. While I couldn't tell from the picture, there are definitely snails that you can keep (and ones you can't) from the beach at Ft. Walton. Heck, people collect from the Keys and vicinity all the time. Florida cerits are cheap, like a quarter in quantity, but last year there were millions at the jetties. I collected one, just to see what it was. Kept it in the refugium until I got a positive i.d., and then when I knew, I went back, and of course, they'd disappeared!
Of course, once bitten, twice shy. Put an oyster drill in your tank and your astreas will start disappering!
We go with confidence into the lfs, and yet we know they often don't know what some things are, or sell you bad stuff as good.
Oh,the little red guy in my avatar I got off the Black Bart last year. He's till going strong and has quite an appetite for hair algae, and I haven't seen him eat anyone else!

Your right Roger I dont there are to many varieties of snails that look like good ones that are bad 2 years ago I collected some from Panama City and put them in my tank I lost 12 clams before I could get the suckers all out never again! Besides this is not a cheap hobby if you need to get free snails then you will never be able to aford the electric or corals

Ouch Casey. I didn't know that story. No wonder you gave such advice.
Of course, it goes way beyond money. I guess it's a throwback from childhood. I'm quite proud of the walnut trees in my parent's yard I started from Cades Cove nuts 25 years ago, or the lemon eucalyptus growing in my backyard in Mississisppi I got from Australian seeds. I'll bet few people have a red-headed, blue-eyed hermit crab, either!
Got to always be careful, which is what your advice to twtybird is. I'm planning an "Andrew's State Park jetties" tank set up in their visitors center, once I get the 150 settled. I was there the other day and the tropicals are returning! Visibility was pretty sucky so no good photos.
