Small town salt thread

I am starting up my tank with a bunch of "fully cycled" live rock (which will happily cook away for a couple of months since I went through TRT Kindergarten).

They sort of have well a P store and some really tiny LFS' here of which one is nice but the others use undergravel filters and plants and are really not tidy.

Salt is heavy and I don't want to spend a hundred bucks to have a bucket of fancy salt shipped. The tank will be only a 28 bow with moderate lighting and no CA reactor or fancy crap.

Is IO really that bad with regular water changes and no desire to have my corals get bigger?

Any mail order bargains where the quantity makes shipping worthwhile?

I see the purists really divided on salt but what works for the plain old goby, clown and cardinal with a toadstool and xenias HOB kind of thang.

Order from drsfostersmith when Reef Crystals are on sale. It almost always on sale. Also search for a coupon code online and you'll get more money off. They also don't charge extra for shipping its great.

I had been getting the web discount at petsmart for a couple of years and the last time I went in, I was told they don't do that anymore. I called the corp and they confirmed they had changed their policy

Nothing wrong with IO, check the bargains online with coupons, maybe get a couple buckets on sale and be set for a while

Sounds like I will use IO then. I just seemed to remember some threads about other salts being better.

That was easy.

The only salt I use besides IO is morton's...

You can boost the IO up to RC standards by using a reef calculator and some kalkwasser made from Ball's pickling lime, btw...

If you want better salt, check the shipping from Foster and Smith...they're very reasonable. I was getting the TMPR there, but my local LFS is now matching the price with my club discount.
