do you have a sump?

Regardless of the answer to that, the way you should do this without "breaking" you is to search the classifieds and buy a quality used skimmer. Im not up to speed on what skimmers you should pick if you dont have a sump and need a hang on type so ill let someone who does know answer that. : )

I use a Aqua-Medic. You can get them at Wai's in town here and they work well.
They are hang on or not.

i would look into the AquaC Remora. They are very nice hang skimmers and should do well on a 46g tank

I bought a coralife about a month ago and love it the only problem is it is very sensitive so you do have to adjust it often well I do anyway.

IMO, I have used both. And the AquaC Remora outperforms the coralife... but thats my opinion.

Hated the RemorasLove the needle wheels. If your looking for new I would try the ASM brand. I use all ER (and am content with them). ASM is made from cheeper material, but functionally should be the same.
