Skimmer Review - Turbofloter Multi Skimmer HOT

Product Review for Turboflotor Multi Skimmer Hang On Tank

Comments:
I tried the Turboflotor Multi as a hang on tank skimmer. It left much to be desired. The problems I found...

1. Fit problems: It would not fit into my tank. I have an acrylic tank and the intake pipe of the skimmer extended too far, into the top brace of the aquarium. You apparently are not supposed to cut these braces...so the skimmer is not fit for its purpose, at least for my tank.

2. Noise: The pump was very noisy. Using the suction cups against the aquarium wall made the vibrations louder. I could easily hear this in the next room.

3. Pump issues: the pump fits into the tank. This thing was just too large. It looked ugly in the tank. And the tube it was attached to was not long enough to allow the pump to use the suction cups effectively.

4. Water flow: the bubble enriched water did not flow continuously in the intake pipes. The guy at the LFS said you need to take out the water flow adjusters all together to make it work. (???) He had one running in the store, and it worked better that way. There was nothing in the instructions that indicate this (see #6).

5. Size: This thing is an ugly monster to hang on the tank.

6. Instructions: The guide book simply is very poor.

7. Output part: The part that returns the water to the tank was huge. It extended almost the whole depth of my tank. It would have gone under the lighting blocking it. It is big and bulky (wide).

One the positive side, the bubbles looked very fine. However, I would not consider this unit even for a sump as the pump was just too noisy. And you cannot just replace the pump, as it contains the patented bubble wand inside. If you run your sump to the basement, maybe that would muffle the noise. Or if your are hard of hearing that works too.

As a replacement I purchased a Red Sea Prism Deluxe as a replacement, which is a hang on tank model. It works well for me.
