This is from the back end of the Euro -reef frustration thread. I'm supposed to be going on vacation tomorrrow and right now it looks like I'll have to leave the skimmer turned off for a week or so, any ideas would be appreciated:
I have been following this thread and I went ahead and cut off the drain pipe to be above the water level. Now, It makes a ton of noise, then about every 5 sec's it sounds like a flushing sound for about 10 sec's and the water rises about 4 inches in the skimmer (the water level doesn't change in the sump) then it gets a little quieter (still a lot more noisy than when I had the pipe just below the water line) the water level in the skimmer drops 4 in then in about 5 sec's it happens over again. I had to turn the skimmer off, I can't take the noise or the huge water fluctuations. What happened? All I did was change the drain to let the water out above the level in the sump. Here is a picture:

Confidence is simply that quiet, assured feeling you have before you fall flat on your face.
Put a coupling on it and raise the drain pipe back up to where it was. If nothing else, it will quiet it down and make it run like it did before the mod.

it changed the pressure in the skimmer, you could add some vinyl tubing to it to get it back into the water before you leave, or lower the water level in the skimmer.

Actually it would be lower the drain back in the water, I guess I have to, I was hoping I might find a solution to the overflowing, still looking for ideas on that. I'm also really curious why raising the drain caused such a huge problem?

Should the skimmer act so wierd and inconsistent because the drain end is out of the water? It doesn't make sense to me?

It happens, it takes some time to get em dialed in sometimes. I once installed a PM beckett skimmer and set the water level too high and drained a 30 gal sump within hours at a store I was working.
My skimmer at home gets to acting up when the tube comes out of the water, but others with your skimmer might have more to add.

It has been set up since December 3, 2007. It worked well until about 3 weeks ago when the periodic overflowing started. I cleaned it twice and have tried a bunch of other stuff since then. I guess I can turn it way down and skim really dry ( empty about 1 cup every 2 weeks?) and see how that goes.

set up right the drain doesnt need to be dumping from above the water level and shouldnt be IMO. submerged is quieter and socks are unecessary and just need maintained.
I answered your post in the other thread and think if you follow it we can get you fixed up
