Question

Skimmer dilemmer

This coming fall I am going to replace my 55gal reef with a 90gal with a 30gal sump (my 55 does not have a sump).

I am currently running a SeaClone skimmer on my 55, which translates; I’m not really running a skimmer on my 55.

So what I would like to do is purchase a good skimmer that I can hang off the 55 until I set up the 90, and then place that same skimmer in the 30 gal sump.

What I am actually asking is for a recommendation on the perfect skimmer that will handle the 90/30, but not so big that I will over-skim my 55.

I really like the Turboflotor 100 Multi, but I fear that it’s too big.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brad

It can be rebuilt.

you can adjust a skimmer so that it skimms below capacity, but you can not tune a skimmer so that it can skimm beyond capacity.

build one of Geoff's DIY skimmers, if it is tall enough, yu can pick up water in the sump and return it to the tank... Skim the tank and sump as one entity regardless of your setup, but you could use the other tank as a quarantine tank and place the old skimmer there.

If you have a turbofloater then your fine. you can't over skim a tank. if there isn't anything to pull out then the skimmer simply won't produce any skimmate. I love the turbofloaters and have rarely ever had a problem. plus the 1000 multi can be a hang on or in sump either way. plus if you get the turbofloater then you won't have to upgrade the skimmer if you want to go a little bigger on the tank in the future.

here is the original.

http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...t=48060&page=2 is an eductor mod for the skimmer.

in this thread is the pdf for the skimmer.

http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...=geoff+skimmer is the newer simpler version.

these should keep you busy. if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.
