Sick Tang

I purchased a purple tang three weeks ago, without doing any research I put it in my 58 gal. tank (to small). Well needless to say he is sick already with white spots all over him. I went to my lfs and there are dozens of medications to choose from. What would be the best brand to treat my sick tang with? Will it get better or just parish from being in such a small tank. I am willing to give it up for a new home but who wants a sick fish? I feel like crap and don't want it to die. Any suggestions?

It sounds like his got ich. Ive heard of a product called kick ich or something its supposed to be good. You could also try a freshwater dip. On the size of the tank for your tang i dont know but some people think a tang needs at least a 75g gallon to be happy. Thats just my 2 cents worth but there are plenty of better aqaursts out there who now more than i do. Hope yor tang gets better.

Yes it sounds like ICH , Like Adam said try a fresh water bath , That would be the 1st thing I would do , Don't like to medicate Fish , and If you have to I would put it in Quarantine, then medicate, Vince

Since your tanks too small -- why not talk to the LFS and see if it will take back the tang for store credit.

Since you now have an ich infested tank you should setup a QT tank ... treat all fish with either hyposalinity or copper - the ich in your show tank will die off if you leave it without fish for 5 weeks.

Heres a link discussing ich and how to cure.

Its real easy to maintain an ich free tank ... just QT your fish before you place them in your show tank.

Use kick ich at the same time bring your S.G. down to 1.015 and temp to 71deg SLOWLY for to weeks to kill the cycle then bring it back up slowly and feed your tang food soaked in galic extreme. You can add UV to your ste up.As for size of tank I have a 40 gal with one in it and I had a 30 gallon with one in it for 18yrs.

side note:
tangs are a magnet for ich..if you can start adding garlic to the main food as a normal thing that shoudl help with future problems...

doing a QT tank maybe the best ..maybe a fresh water dip first then into the QT tank if you can
