i don't know exactly what type of macroalgea is this...but they are growing pretty fast...should i take them out or not...it seems like the pods and stomatella were enjoying it...
BTW, i don't have a refugium...

It must grow fast or the tangs don't like it? My tang will eat macro algae till it look like a puffer fish. As long as its not killing coral its helping keep the bad algae down.

My guess is sargassum, too. Does it grow from a central stalk like a plant with 'leaves' that grow out along the stem? I always got a nice crop of sargassum when I bought a new piece of live rock, but unfortunately it never lasted. It always fell apart after a brief spurt of rapid growth. I don't think it is tropical and the heat in our reefs kills it off.

its sargassum, prolly wont live long! I havent been able to get it to grow, and most of what ive read says the same thing, its difficult, dont let any die and rot in there, as long as it is attatched to the rock it is prolly healthy, my yellow tang wont even eat it so I moved it to the fuge where it is not doing anything, I think its a real slow grower...It is pretty though

I've not had much luck with sargassum either, but my lfs has a great crop that's been growing at least a year. It can send out shoots that grow pretty fast, but it's never taken over his tank (a 330 gallon cube)

i did my own research and you guys are right...it's a sargassum...i had this for months already...and i don't see any sign of slowing down...just keep on growing...non of tangs touch it...
should i be concern? it doesn't look like it's harming any corals, it's just that they might be a tough competition in terms of nutrients to the corals.
tank specs:
125g
about 7mos old set-up
2 x 150w MH hqi
2 x 30w actinic
~200lbs LR
~60lbs LS
sumpless
no refugium
8 powerheads on wave timer

Emerald crabs seem to love the stuff. I only had a little left in the tank when I added two emeralds. Those two crabs went at scraping and eating that sargassum and didn't stop until it was completely gone. So if you are looking for a possible control to its growth.....
