Should I use charcoal or not?

Should I be putting charcoal in my filter sock in my sump? If so what kind? Are there advantages to adding charcoal even if you keep up with regular water changes and your parameters are good? Are there any disadvantages?

I would run carbon if I wasn't so cheep and lazy.

There are advantages,.. like removing the chemicals Leathers put off that harm SPS,... but I don't see a pressing need.
