Should I move.......

Should I move the sand where I want it??? As you can see from the below picture it is getting blown into piles by my return and powerheads?? Also can you see the layer of "dust" forming on the glass?? NExt time I am going to buy crushed coral......this sand stuff is wayyyyyy to stressfull.

Hi Steve,

What size is your tank?

How many pounds of LS do you have in there?

How many powerheads do you have running in there?

Have you tried to position your powerhead flow deflector at a 45 degree angle towards the water surface?

I don't even think you need alot of flow. Take out the powerhead and crank down the flow. You are setting up a tank. You have to allow sand to settle down quickly.

if you move the sand it will move right back where it wants to be. it will take a couple of months for the sand to get heavy with bacteria and settle down. even then it will settle quickly but still move around in dunes.

here is my tank just before the DSB was removed. them are some good dunes there.

WOW!! Those are some huge dunes.......I just want a few inches of sand on the bottom. I plan on having a goby. As you can see there is NO sand on the right side of my tank where my return is.....there is MAJOR flow from my reutrn! I also put some pieces of LR in there......it has been sitting in my basement in a holding tank for awhile......I think it's dead actually.....but I scrubbed it, rinsed it and added it!

Thanks everyone!

I don't like the way the bare-bottom looks.......for me! But it looks **** good on your system. Maybe in 100-150 years when my tank looks 1/2 as good as yours I'll try it.

I just don't see this ending anytime soon........it's still awful....I'll wait a couple of weeks before I start to go nuts...I'm not in a hurry!

you can divide the return into more than one outlet. this will slow the water velocity. this should help in not stirring the sand as much.

Geoff,

How do I do that?? With a SCWD?

I am thinking about turning the system off for the day to see if that helps.
