Every LFS I visit is at least 2 hours away from me. I tell them how far I have to travel, and they bag it with extra water. I always bring my styrofoam cooler with me and place the bags in there for the ride home. I have never had any problems with them being in the bags for 4 or 5 hours even.

Fish are kept in bags for up to 36hrs or more when they are exported from their their collection stations. The fish are generally fasted for 3-5 days prior and are kept in bags supersaturated with oxygen though. A few hours in a large bag and a temperature controlled environment should be no problem. For rips longer then 7 hours I would make sure that the fish has not been fed recently.
