Bamboo at least 180, I think horn shark is larger though.

this is an excellent book that will tell you everything you need to know about keeping sharks, as well as tank size depending on species, and examples of entire system set-ups. Very good book.

that is an extremely good book. almost all of the info i spout out about Elasmobranchs come from that book.
that being said i do not have mine with me, but i am pretty sure a Chiloscyllium punctatum needs a much larger tank than that. they get nearly 3' in length. they can also grow pretty quickly. there are better choices, but they are not readily available.

I know the book lists a 180 as the suggested size to house a Brown banded bamboo shark for the span of its life.

55 is pretty small. aren't they only 18 front to back? or are they only 12? a newly hatched Brown banded bamboo shark will be around 8 inches. once it starts to grow, its area to turn around will get small fairly quickly. with bamboo sharks you need at least 24" of space for them to turn around when they are full grown (more if possible). If you are set on starting with a small tank, be ready to upgrade sooner than later.

the cat sharks. the bamboo just happens to be an average member of the group. most are that size. there are smaller ones, but they are uncommon in the trade. none are small enough to fit in a 55. the 55 is just to thin. 12" is not enough room for them to turn around as Jasontkd has said.
Horn sharks require a larger tank. mainly because they are not as flexible as the cat sharks. they are unable to turn around in as small of an area. they need a 30" wide tank in order to be happy.

The reason I keep referencing the bamboo shark is because I am most familiar with it because I researched them a lot when i was thinking of getting one a while back.
