Second Banggai brood on the way
No rest for Mortimer. Morticia was busy shimmying even yesterday. Mortiner ate a good breakfast and by this afternoon his cheeks are already full of eggs again. Too bad I missed the egg exchange...they are doing this in broad daylight! I don't even need the Spice channel . With only 5 days rest, I'm not too confident that he will hold the eggs till they're ready...but we'll see. If he does, he'll definately get a nice vacation away from Morticia for a week or so.
All 6 baby banggai are doing great!!
Brooke

It's still dark in the tank this morning..but as of yesterday, he was still holding the eggs. I don't know..but I have a feeling he will hang on to them. We have 3 weeks to figure out how to get a grow-out tank/vacation home plumbed to the reef!

Hi Brooke! I just read an article where a male banggai "spit out" 31 babies! Brooke I think you will have a handful with that many!
I wanted to ask you a question about the male. In the article it says they are found in small groups of 2-60 and wonder in a larger group if the males are not worked as hard with carrying the young and they get a break once in a while.
Do you think you male could die eventually if kept busy all the time? I believe you said you were going to maybe separate them so Mortimer gets a rest! Which brings up another question: Would the separation cause them not to spawn again?
Like I say I only have one banggai, but I imagine you are learning alot about them and their babies as you go along. You and Jon are doing a great job with the parents and their off springs in giving them the best chance to live and a good envirnoment to grow up in. Johnny

Yeah..you said it Johnny...learning as we go along. I'm sure the males are kept pretty busy on the reef, and I'm also sure that he would not let himself starve to death for the sake of his fry. Many people catch their males a few days before the release, and then return them to the reef fat and sassy. If we can get a tank plumbed into the reef, we wouldnt have to worry about him acclimating to different water qualities, etc. From what I've read breeding usually begins a few days/weeks after the male returns to the main tank. This is obviously stressful on him, though. But, so is not eating for 3 weeks at a time. I'm sure the females outlive the males! So, we'll see what happens after this brood. Hopefully I can catch him and give him at least a week of rest and gourmet food to get him ready again. He is still holding eggs this morning.
Day 6 for the babies and no losses! Their little bodies have just about doubled in size.
Brooke

Wow Brooke, I gotta tell you, I am so jealous right now! But anyway, I would make sure that male gets a rest. From what I have read he most likely will not hold on to this brood, but I also would have said he would not hold on to his first ever brood either. So, where does that leave me? Anyway, good luck with this! BTW, were these fish wild-caught or tank-bred? If they were tank-bred, who was your supplier, as I don't think my male is cut out for this whole reproduction thing.

Hows Jon doing with the plan to link the 2 tanks to a common sump?
2 possibilities come to mind. Set up a smaller tank, 20 long maybe, next to the reef slightly higher and tap into one of the main tank return lines and have slow current run thru then gravity drain back into the reef or similar setup near the sump, Tho I would want them close to watch them grow. Plus it would shorten the time the male is "in transit"

Doug, my plans are/were for a 90 gallon which would be seperate then the tank we will get ready for the male/grow out tank. I will probably hook an extra 20 that we have next to the 135 off of the sump with a slow gravity overflow drain... more plumbing yeah. I am still not sure if we are going to do a 90 gallon preditor fish only tank.
Dave we have a few people that want a few babies so far but we are not sure about the rest yet.
Drew, we are not sure about the origins on our Banggai's
