Sebae anemone

This question is for all of you who have had or currenly have a sebae anemone (hectaris crispa?). I have one, and have had ot for about 6 months or so. It's doing great, so this isn't a help me post, but I have noticed that it is becoming less white, and more brownish. I suspect that this is because the nature of the symbiotic algae contained within the anemone is changing due to my tank lighting conditions. Shortly after I purchased the anemone it appeared to expell it's algae in a slimy strand, and then proceeded to shrink up like it was gonna die. I relocated it to a location that received more current/light, and in a few days it opened fully, and hasn't shown any signs of less than excellent health since. It eats well, and has a tomato clown to play with. Also, my coral banded shrimp has taken up residence directly below it (always touching with antennae) and my cleaner shrimp has taken up residence diretly above it (antennae always tapping it). It's a pretty neat scene around the anemone. The only change I've noticed is the gradual brown cast that it has taken on. I seem to remember reading about similar situations in other posts but can't find them

What are your experiences with sebaes? I know...most people haven't had success, but I have kept them in the past for 2+years. Thanks for your input!

Between shipping, holding, different lighting conditions (if any), by the time you got him it was time for some major zoox adjustment.

More than likely being darker brown can be an indication of a higher concentration of zoox, or even a different kind.

If he seems to be happy, don't worry about it.

If I recall correctly from reading up on these this is a good sign for sebaes in captivity.

Here's an excerpt from an article on the net that I had copied to my homemade beginners manual.... "No one I have spoken with, not even the public aquariums, can keep the white or yellow ones alive for more than 6-8 months. Out of the over 20 responses I received regarding sebaes only 2 anemones had stayed alive for over one year. Both of the anemones were tan in color either when purchased or had turned tan shortly there after. "

I can't remember where I copied if from...maybe actwinfish.com. There was another interesting indepth article on seabaes...I'll try to find it again. HTH.

BTW....GO PACKERS!

I almost bought a bright yellow sebae yesterday! I was also drooling over a brilliant magenta 'purple long-tentacled anemone, as well. Alas, I only walked out with my excuse for going, a jar of flakes.

Yea...they are beautiful in the LFS...I tried a couple many years ago and actually because they kept dieing was why I finally tore my reef tank down and converted it to FW. Here's one of the ariticles I was talking about, there's another very good one but I just can't find it right now.

That was a really good article, thanks, Allyson. Back when I was a rank newbie and befor I discovered the Web, I went through at least a half dozen Sebae anemones, a couple pink-tipped, and a carpet befor giving up on anemones. Not one lfs employee at the stores I shopped ever let on how difficult they are to keep alive! I just assumed I was still too ignorant of reef keeping (and I was, too, but even so....!).
