Scratch Plan A!!!
Ok for my 75 gallon, I want to scratch the skimmer altogether and just build a sump/refugium. How does that sound. I think it was whisky who originally suggested that a while ago!

Someone told me that I do not really need a protein skimmer except for SPS corals, which I am not keeping. The others like a more "nutrient rich" environment. So you all are saying that you have more maintenance without the skimmer? ANd it does not get the water "too" clean?

here is what is necessary to go skimmer less.
make the refugium easily accessible so that you can remove it completely on a regular basis as it fills.
you will need to make sure all LR is not touching the substrate. put it on lifts. Fly Guy has a great little lift system.
make sure that you are able to get a siphon hose to the entire surface area of the substrate, you do not want to have detritus piling up, this will shorten the already short life span of the substrate.
you will need to feed very sparingly in order to keep the nutrient levels low enough since siphoning will be the only way to remove nutrients.
you will need to run the refugium on a reverse light cycle to keep the pH from plumetting during the night as the entire substrate goes aerobic.
if you keep the feeding to a minimum than you should get about 3-4 years out of the substrate. if you do not than you could only get a year or two.
HTH,
G~

other benifits to using a skimmer beside removing stuff
it helps mix oxygen into the water
Skimmerless is definatly the cheaper route to go,
but, I wouldn't recomend it for a beginner

Hey! I never said anything like that. I said that you should make a sump so you can get a better skimmer than most of the ones that come stock in the pre-made sumps.
