Sand Switching Question

I have a 30 gallon oceanic cube and have been running it for about 3 years. I currently have a mixture of black and white sand (I forget the name of it) and its starting to get a lot of crud on the bottom. I was told that changing out the sand wouldnt be a great idea, but adding more sand to the top would be better. I was thinking of adding Tahitian black sand to the top layer, what do you guys think?

can you take a pic of the area that dont look so good.

as a sand bed grows old, it becomes a sink , meaning it traps orangics in it. the areas that are really bad would be turning black. do you have areas like that?

Its not really black at all, it just looks like rotting food... I just wanted a change to my tank and thought the tahitian black sand would like nice.
