I think most people will say sand or nothing at all. But I'm very new so don't use my advice.

I have a 2" crushed coral bottom. This is my first tank and have not used sand yet. I have had no trouble with it.

P.S.- Tank is a 10 gallon FOWLR, PC lighting, mechanical and skimmer

Sand is what most people use. But I have also used CC in the past for many years and still do on my trigger tank. But on in a reef tank if I was going to use something it would be sand.

cc will trap alot of detrius and unless you vacuum it constantly it wont be as efficient as a fine sand bed this is because there is less space between the grains and dont have such an advective flow leaving the detrius more time to pe picked up into your sump/skimmer. i reccomend some live sand at a very small depth and constant vacuuming or a dsb of 3 inch or more with very infrequent vacuuming.
