salinity?

why do most companies recommend salinity between 1.021 and 1.023 when natural sea water is 1.026?

what do you guys keep yours at?

There are some regional variations in salinity as well as thermal and depth gradients, so you can find several salinities in the ocean. I try and keep mine around 1.025. I'm sure it varies a little, I probably only check in monthly. I try to mix my water change water to 1.025 and the tank rarely deviates more than .001 from that.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

I try to keep mine around 1.025. but not sure why companies recomend low salinity. Im not sure if this is true or not but i heard one lfs say that a lower salinty would help to keep fish free from disease. i dont buy it has some one else heard that.

I also keep mine around 1.025 to have room for water evaporation and what not.

There used to be a thought that keeping salinity around 1.019 constantly would prevent ich and pathogens from the water. It doesn't. Over a long time it can possibly damage fish kidneys. The main reason LFS still keep it low is salt is expensive.

I normally keep my tank around 1.024. Fluctuations in salintiy do not keep me up at night. As long as its gradual, I figure the fish are fine.

Here's something I found interesting, I was just in the Caribbean and I brought home some water. It measured 1.028 with my refractometer.

I was thinkng of raising my salinity a bit.

As others have posted its an old thought that it would be better for the fish. I believe it was a fish only type of thing. Reef tanks are recommended to be at 1.026.

1.025 here...when I've lived in coastal locations the SG of NSW was always 1.026 spot on...I know there are some variances around the world though.
