Salifert Test Kit Question
i finally got my salifert nitrate and phosphate test kits in the mail. but i have a question about the nitrate kit. it says add 1 ML of water for the test. is this correct?? 1 ml barely covers the bottom of the test tube. do they mean 10 ml? my phosphate test is showing darn near zero, so thats positive!
thanks guys and gals.

You can't always rely on the results of a phos test. My phos is undetectable using a Salifert kit and there is hair algea all over my tank.

yeah, i hate to say it but saliferts po4 test is worthless IMO. The range isnt low enough
Unfortunately, the po4 tests that do read low enough start at about $70

J. don't bother.
They will not tell you total phosphorus, and only read water soluble ortho-phosphates.

Total phosphorus is all over the place.
No matter how sensitive your test is, if you are testing water, then you are only testing what's in the water.

Boy, I wish I had found this thread before my Salifert phosphat test arrived!
I just tested and I am getting reading of 0.
It says for higher sensitivity, double the ingrediants, and I did, and still resulted in 0.

The trick is getting it to let loose, and even then, do you really want to know how much phosphate there is per gram of sand/rock/ etc that might not be available to algae? Some if this might relese as pH changes (in the depths of the DSB or the rock), or as bacteria, etc. produce phosophatases... or not. So many variables in this thought process; then even when you figure it out, what does it really mean for us in a closed compartmentaized system???

That marine sediments burp. And what's there right now, will not be the same in a little while.
