safe or not safe to use?
Hi Everyone!
For some unknown reason the past cpl of weeks my tank has become smelly. Not all the time just every now and then(yes Ive showered).
I was thinking about running carbon to remove the smell.
The question I have is I have brand new(only used once) plastic bottle of diamond active carbon under my kitchen sink. Two weeks ago the bug guy came in and sprayed the kitchen and yes under the sink where the carbon is. Is the carbon still safe to use? The lid is closed tightly and the plastic container is not harmed in any way. I hate to throw it away it's a large container almost completely full.
Thanks
Patrick

i would wash the container, it should have a safty seal on it too, under the cap, after washing it, open it. it would be fine imo.
did you wash the sludge off the inside?

I understand. When I first used carbon all my leathers got ticked off and I had no idea why....but after some time they bounced back and no problem when I change the carbon

Thanks Bill
I had no problems when I used it before. What scares me is that some how the bug spray penetrated the plastic and contaminated to carbon.

Warning... a smelly tank is a sign of dirty water... carbon is a band aid that will help for now but i would really recommend re-assesing your skimmer capacity and flow in the tank. if you skim better your water will not have the stuff in it that smells.

I have a new coralife 220 skimmer on a 150 tank
flow I have 1 seio 1500
1 seio 1100
1 aquaclear 110
1aquaclear 70
I have a 30 gallon sump with a mag 500
I did notice when I was wiping down the walls of my sump that seems to be where the smell is coming from.
thanks
Patrick

Thanks Brent
the only pump I have is the aqua clear 110 hob. I use it when I want to run carbon. the aquaclear 70 is a power head.
I'm not sure how you go about cleaning a sump? Do you have to empty it out? Can I just wipe it down? I have a large population of pods running around in it and I dont want to kill them since my mandarin depends on them.

do you ever clean yours? How do you do it with out killing your pods. My sump is full of pods and my mandarin loves them.
Thanks
Patrick
