Rusted Sedra impeller

WHat the...? I took apart my Sedra pump (came with ER skimmer) to clean it and found the bottom part of the impeller completely rusted. This can't be normal. Or good...

Why did this happen? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Not completely sure on the spare impeller, maybe contact the company?

Almost looks like it is chromed steel, which would explain the good amount of rust; stainless also oxidizes but quite slow.

The only thing the iron (II, and III) oxide will do is stimulate macro and a little micro algae growth. Not much to worry about.

you could take a dremel with the wire brush to clean that up for now.

The problem is it's more than just dirty. The rust has corroded the magnet to the point where pieces are falling off.

I was under the impression that Sedra was the same as the old Sen pumps, I had a 900 that the impellor split and rusted out causing serious Iron toxicity issues.
Check the vendor sites and seee who carries these, I would order a spare impellor and clean the pump monthly.
I have been using my Sen as a pool pump and the impellor split again in FW

Darn... I was under the impression that the Sedra pumps that came with the euroreef skimmers were really good. euro-reef won;t take "end user inquiries" so i have to look elsewhere. thanks for the advice everyone.

MarineDepot customer service is great and perhaps PA's is too. I'm sure that they would want to know of potential issues w/ their "highend" skimmers

Premium aquatics gave me the warranty email for euro-reef.

er.warranty@euro-reef.com

ER wrote back and said I should send in my impeller for a replacement. I guess I'll have to run without a skimmer for a few days. Nothing much in the tank these days anyway.
