Ro/di units

What is the difference between a Ro unit and a RO/DI unit?

From my instructions manual on my Kent Maxxima

Maxxima unit incorporates a TFC or membrane so it can be run on municipal or
well water systems. Chlorine can damage a TFC membrane, so proper maintenance isessential. The water in our taps is filled with all sorts of toxic materials. Among these can be lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium, pesticides, herbicides, industrial pollutants (carbon tetrachloride, vinyl chloride, benzine etc.), gasoline, and trihalomethanes (from reactions between organic matter and chlorine), chlorine, radium, and radon gas to name just a few.

Some substances can be toxic to humans and to aquarium fish. Phosphates and silicates are very common in tap water, though usually not toxic to humans, these cause undesirable algae growths in all types of aquariums.

Utilizing Reverse Osmosis will remove the majority of these contaminates from the water. The Maxxima unit adds a post deionization resin filter ( OR DI )to polish the R/O water to 99% removal.

This highly filtered water is not recommended for drinking due to its lack of minerals and possible odd taste.

It also says not to use an activated carbon pre-filter on well water since they can encourage microbial growth on the filter. They should be run after... weird, huh? But you definitely need them if your water has chloramine... Whatever, read it if you are interested, or stuck like me...

thanks for the info. I was a little unsure about choosing between the two.

if you are looking for good deals on RODI units, I just did research on the whole thing and boiled down my choices to three online suppliers:

www.airwaterice.com = (the owner is Walt - ask for him for any questions) he sells the Typhoon series. I got the "original" typhoon rodi unit for $129 and then added the accessories I needed. Their TyphoonIII is the same as the "original" but costs $199 because they include all the accessories if you need them or not. I choose to buy the $129 unit and add things a'la'carte and it ended only costing $170 with the accessories I wanted.

www.buckeyefieldsupply.com = (the owner is Russ - great with answering questions) - they are priced exactly the same as Walt's company

www.thefilterguys.biz = they are a major supporter to this website. i never looked that deepy into them but everyone on this website SWEARS by them

p.s. you are from Baltimore? I'm from Cincinnati... congrats on winning the AFC North since the Bengals are in a downward spiral, the Steelers are just 'bad' and the Browns will always be a 4-n-12 team until they start laying out $$$ for players
