Ro/di units

How does a RO/DI unit work. Do I have to hook it up to a water source because if so I don't have one near my tank.

I'm setting mine up in the laundry room. I picked up a brass "Y" adapter (hose style) which allows me to split the cold water going to the washer to the RO/DI as well. From there you can run 1/4" plastic tubing to wherever you need.

I picked one up on ebay that hooks right up to the sink. I hook it up and put the ro water in a big rubbermaid drum add my salt turn on the heater and power head 24 hrs later it's ready to go.

Laundry room work perfect for me too. Remember that there's a LOT of waste water to get rid of.

Mine is in the laundry room too. You will also need some storage for the RO/DI water - usually folks use big plastic garbage cans - and these also serve to be mixing buckets. You can add your salt and a powerhead and 24 hours later VOILA you have ready-to-use saltwater for your tank!

Oh, and please check the pH and salinity before you put it in the tank (smile)!

I'm getting tired of going to the local fish store and purchasing RO/DI water at $1 per gallon. It's time to buy my own system. I've been looking around on the Internet and have seen some pretty nice systems, but they are rather expensive. Which is fine, if the quality is there. Then I looked to ebay and found some of the same systems for sale, new, for about .40 cents on the dollar. Can anyone tell me a reputable brand? Do I need the 4-5 gallong holding tank that comes with some of these systems? Since I don't have to contend with a wife, I'm planning on mounting it by the fridge in the kitchen and running RO/DI water into the fridge for ice and drinking water as well. I'm seeing some nice systems for around $200 bucks, is that reasonable, or am I buying junk? Thanks!!!
