RO/DI safe for drinking?

Is RO/DI water, below 5pm, safe for drinking? Don;t we want SOME minerals in our drinking water?

I think RO is good; we should get all of our essential elements from food.

I don't drink DI'd RO because it uses my resin too quickly; has a great taste tho.

Isn't the hydration you get from drinking dependent on the electrolites you get from the water? ie: gatorade

Resin... it comes after the RO... they recommend swtiching it every 3 years. How do you know when it runs out... and why does yours run out quickly?

And also, why does the water produced by the AquariumPharmaceuticals Tap Water Purifier taste so bad. It's all DI.

The RO membrane should be replaced every three years, prefilters should be replaced 6-12 months. I use color change resin, goes from green to purple. The resin should be replaced whenever it turns color (or resistance of the water produced goes below specified ranges). Mine lasts around 4 months.

Is it safe ... yes

Do we want minerals in our drinking water ... you bet .. thats what provides the taste and thats why almost every provider of bottled drinking water adds some minerals to their product.

The instructions state "Not Intended For Human Consumption". "For aquarium use only".

This type of water filter is made for those that have nearly perfect tap water. It's mostly for chlorine removal, to lower TDS, and reduce nitrates.

I bought one and it lasted a week. It fouled from our high nitrates 28-35ppm and presence of bacteria in our tap water. By the end of the week, the Tap Water Purifier was producing yellow water that smelled just like old car or bicycle tires. I used it to change my betta's bowl with and he went nuts: gasping for air!

DI doesn't filter out bacteria, it only absorbs chemicals; this is why it's not safe for human consumption. RO uses a very fine mesh that only lets sub-micron molecules and other objects through, and since most bacteriums and microbes are much larger than a micron they do not make it past the RO stage.

And yes DI without a prefilter will last for no time.

Truth be told, RO/DI water will not harm you. However, pure water (i.e. without minerals) will actually strip minerals from your body. When your body drinks water, it depends on a balance of minerals between the water and the body. If the water has more minerals than your body, it will strip them from the water. However if the water is more pure than your body is, then you will find that the water itself will strip minerals AWAY. If you drink pure grade, chemical laboratory water, you will soon find yourself needing a trip to the bathroom. So in the end......drink RO/DI if you feel a compelling need for pure water, otherwise stick with a britta filter, or tap water.

Water in concern to hydration is not a completely black and white topic. When you drink water for hydration, it is the most readily used substance by the body. Although people say that gatorade gets you hydrated better, that is not completely true. It does a good job hydrating you, but it also caries nutrients and electrolytes thaty the body loses during exercise. However, these are not things that make you able to use water any better, it is jhust extra stuff that your body needs replenished to stay effective in sport. When they say that they are a perfect balance of the things your body needs, that doesn't just apply to water. the balance is in the carbohydrates. It has been found that adding a certain amount of carbs to activity keep your body fueled. but, too many will cause stomach irritation, therefore they are perfectly balanced in that respects. But, for everyday life, water and food is used in the body to give you that mixture you need.
