RO DI Question

I recently moved to a house with well water. since the move my reef tank has been doing poorer in general and I believe it is the water. so I am buying an RO DI unit. however I am new to these and had a question. when it is fresh water RO DI it has a low pH and low DKH. when you are using RO DI to replenish evaporation, what do you add to the water to raise the pH and DKH? just baking soda or should I be doing something else. let me know thanks.

Well...the answer to this question rely's a little on husbandry.

You really shouldn't be topping off too much water at one time. A drip or topping off twice a day means that the amount of water you're adding at any one time is not a whole lot. So while it is a lower pH, it has almost no affect.

But if you're topping off once a week, or every couple days, it CAN have an affect. But this isn't good for the tank anyways...so this is just adding fuel to the fire, so to speak.

Also, when mixing fresh saltwater for water changes, you'll have a lower pH too. Which is why you should let the new salt water mix for at least 24 hours. The stuff in the salt mix will age and bring the pH to an equalibrium during this time.

So the answer to your question is, yes...you're right. THe pH is lower. But if you're topping off correctly, this shouldn't make a difference.
