RO/DI filter replacement

I just got a TDS meter last weekend and realized that my RO/DI hasn't been hooked up correctly for months, so I've essentially been putting tap water into my tank! The membrane wasn't pushed in far enough, so there was only a 10 point drop between the tap water and the filtered water. Everything is hooked up correctly now and my TDS meter reading ranges from 0001 to 0007 depending on the temp of the water. Now that I actually know that my filters are working, at what point should I replace them?

I change prefilters when they look dirty (clear canisters so i can see) and my membrane when the tds goes over 25.

Carbon blocks should be changed every few months along with the prefilters. I change mine every 6 months. Carbon blocks protect the membrane from being ruined by chlorine and are relatively inexpensive to change, as are prefilters. I've never had to change my membrane. I think TDWyatt has been using the same membrane for several years.

my TDS has been reading 0ppm since day one. When that changes, I will replace filters.

I change my sediment every couple months. It looks dirty (brown after about 30 gallons). Carbon is changed once every 4 months or so. My DI gets replaced when my TDS is 1ppm. RO gets replaced every few years. I have a duel in line TDS meter and monitor after RO and after DI so I know how both of those meters are performing. I also have a handheld meter that I can check the tap water with. My typical measurements are tap about 300ppm, after RO about 8-10ppm, and after DI 0ppm.

Everybody's water is different, check it every couple months and when it's dirty replace. You never know they could be working on the pipes on your road and make it dirty quicker one time then the next change.
